UFC 119: Mir vs Cro Cop will take place in Indianopolis in Indiana, United States on September 25th.
With less than 3 weeks to go, I have to admit that not much on this card excites me. But still, here’s my predictions.
Frank Mir vs Mirko Filipović (Cro Cop)
Sadly I think this fight is Mir’s easily. His standup is good enough to hang with Cro Cop and his submission game is much better. Cro Cop doesn’t have much in the way of an offensive wrestling game to negate Mir’s BJJ. Cro Cop is dangerous standing though and who knows when THAT left high kick will come?
Antônio Rogério Nogueira vs. Ryan Bader
Tough one. Little Nog is dangerous, but I think Bader takes this with his wrestling.
Matt Serra vs. Chris Lytle
I think Serra edges the decision again, but another close fight.
Sean Sherk vs. Evan Dunham
I think Sherk will be too much for Dunham at this stage. Wins decision.
Melvin Guillard vs. Jeremy Stephens
This should be a good punch up. Guillard to win by TKO round 3.
Rating: Jiu Jitsu University by Saulo Ribeiro & Kevin Howells.
Saulo Ribeiro is a 4th degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blackbelt, a five time World Jiu-Jitsu Champion and two time ADCC Submission Wrestling World Champion. He began his training in Rio De Janeiro under Royler Gracie, the son of Helio Gracie, at the legendary Gracie Humaitá. Alongside brother and fellow World Jiu-Jitsu Champion Alexandre Ribeiro, he runs the University of Jiu-Jitsu in San Diego, California.
He is also the Jiu Jitsu Coach of MMA Fighter Diego Sanchez, who trains out of The Arena (MMA) gym in San Diego.
So yeah, he knows his shit.
I like to keep my reviews short and to the point. This is an awesome book and will benefit any Gi grappler.
Layout
The book is split into belts from white through to black. With what Saulo Riberio believes each should look to master. From basic survival skills for white belts to refining your skills for black belts.
Coverage
All areas of the game are covered including posture, survival, escapes, the guard, guard passing and submissions.
Comments
I’ve had this about a year now, and have referred to it numerous times. It’s a great reference book for the basics. It is by no means an exhaustive BJJ technique library but places emphasis on getting all the fundamentals down.
If I could only have one resource for my Gi game then this would be it without a doubt. Highly recommended.
I’ve added a couple of new features in the last few days.
The first allows you to submit your own review of gyms you have been to. So bloggers you can add your article along with a link to your blog for some extra exposure here.
I’ve also added a gym directory listing that anyone can add to so you can add your gym or favourite gyms that you recommend to the listing here.
So I got 4 out of 5 right. Pretty good… I should start betting
Frankie Edgar vs. B.J. Penn
Wrestling is becoming more and more dominant. I do find it very strange that BJ is one of the best BJJ practitioners there is and yet he rarely looks to take it to the ground. He seems content with fighting off his back which inevitably gives points to the wrestler on top.
I think he needs to rework his general game plan to get back in title contention.
Randy Couture vs. James Toney
So Toney didn’t even throw a punch before Couture got the takedown and choked him out.
Hopefully this answers the boring debate that a good boxer can KO any MMA fighter. However there are already excuses circulating that Toney was out of shape etc. In shape, out of shape, whatever. With only one skill set you can’t be successful at the elite level of MMA.
Demian Maia vs. Mario Miranda
Maia nearly got the sub several times… but seemed to make some mistakes which is unusual for a BJJ player of his calibre. However Miranda is also a very good BJJer so it’s not surprising he put up a good defence. In the end Maia got the decision by grappling domination.
Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard
Gray isn’t getting anymore fun to watch. Florian is usually in exciting fights but Maynard managed to turn it into a boring decision in his favour. Unfortunately Maynward gets the next title shot now against Edgar…. two wrestlers… with maynard being the bigger and already holding a decision over Edgar means we can expect 5 rounds of boringness. Think i’ll give that fight a miss.
Nate Diaz vs. Marcus Davis
I got this wrong and Nate looked good at welterweight. He dominated Davis everywhere and got the sub! Diaz vs Penn could be a good fight next I think!
